The Enchanted Forest and Wishing Well Cavern

My life is full of blessings and one of them is having the opportunity to participate in this amazing event being put on by my friends in Missoula, MT, Enchanted Forest.

I am creating an enchanting installation, a Wishing Well Cavern, that participants will enter and make a wish within. The cavern wall is covered in crystal mirror paintings and shimmering with the waters of the Earth.  These beautiful mixed media paintings are for sale and a portion of the sale goes towards Turning the Wheel Missoula’s school programs.

In addition to constructing this one of a kind immersive art installation I will be performing a vignette from my one woman show, Red Shoes.

Society 6: Full Moon Collection

Color is normally where I am most comfortable working, but for my fall projects my palette has been almost exclusively white, grey, and silver. To share this current theme with you I have created a mini collection of six new paintings on Society6. ENJOY!

The magic space in fall and winter when the days shorten and the brightness of the moons builds to a nourishing fullness. The alchemical energy of letting go and manifesting simultaneously in this quiet season. Blessed Be.

Check out the New Collection Here.

This fun new collection has a bunch of new society6 products that I haven’t had available for purchase in my store before like the credenza and wall mural. Have fun exploring and if there is a piece you like be sure to give it a heart. Your love on my Society6 store is almost as valuable as actually purchasing a goodie from the store. And I really enjoy seeing what pieces people are resonating with. Look forward to seeing what you think.

Sacred Spheres of Self Realization

My life has been tossed upside down this month. After a lot of bumps and ups and downs I’m taking steps to know myself better. And as a result I’m on my own for awhile on a journey of self realization.

This big leap into the next phase of my life has inspired a new series of paintings. Last week as my show, Red Shoes, wrapped, and the realities of the next few months settled into place I turned to my trusty Triple Goddess Cards for insight.

I drew “The Journey Home” which resonated deeply with where I am currently. This card talks about the sacredness of the number seven and ecstasy of self realization, representing the Chariot from the traditional tarot. The card discusses the Seven Spheres of TranscenDance and I was immediately inspired to create a series of painting to kick off this time of exploration. In addition to discussing these seven spheres the card is linked to the ancient Bird Goddess. I have resonated with the medicine of birds for a long time and incorporating bird magic into this project felt like a perfect fit.

So for seven days I drew a card from my Bird Cards deck and listened deeply to the message of the card and created a painting. To further explore the vibration of each bird messenger I listened to the bird song while I painted. It was really soothing to paint to birds singing and I think it influenced how I worked. All of the messages I received were extremely inspiring and so I wanted to share each painting and its message with you.

Day 1: Nightingale

“Expressing the sheer joy of creating universe upon universe of wonder and miracles.” If you’ve ever had the joy of hearing a nightingale sing they are breathtaking. It calls straight to the heart and pierces the air with thrilling energy. Nightingale reminds us that through the power of love we have the ability to change anything. Here is the song I listened to while painting.

Day 2: Rooster

I was very worried when I drew the Rooster card because I was committed to listening to each birds song while I painted, and listening to a Rooster crow for several hours didn’t sound all that appealing. However, I was pleasantly surprised the find that the call of the Rooster was actually quite enjoyable to listen to. Rooster teaches us to Celebrate! To toot our own horn! To remember how magnificent we truly are. Let me know what you think of the Rooster’s song.

IPQJ0455Day 3: Wren

Wren asks us to release old stories that no longer serve us. Wren tells us that it is our responsibility to choose joy, and that ultimately we have to have the confidence to follow what brings us joy and leave behind anything negative that is no longer serving us. To me the energy of this card was a soft sort of departure, not an abrupt letting go but to melt into the deep knowing inside our hearts, and that is what I hoped to capture with the colors and energy in the painting. Listen to the wren here.

This bird stumped me for awhile because it’s not a real bird. Its an idea that represents the transcendent quality of bird medicine. Blue Bird of Happiness is an experience we all have inside of us, a knowing of joy and wholeness that resides in our hearts. Its that bursting feeling of joy that swells from the heart when we find ourselves in those peaceful, most serendipitous moments. Since the Blue Bird of Happiness isn’t a real creature I chose to listen to a loop of the mountain bluebird, which resides in the mountains above where I live in Boulder, CO.

IMG_4494Day 5: Raven

I also struggled with the Raven energy when I first drew the card. It spoke of pulling back the veil and revealing the truth that everything is interconnected. No imagery or colors came to me at first, but after meditating and resting I chose to paint by candlelight and chose colors that resonated deeply with me. Since I am one with all, the colors are also one with the Raven which may defy the usual associations people have the bird and its energy. In the end this became one of my favorite paintings in the series and I look forward to painting by candlelight again.  Listen to Raven here.

Swallow reminds us to follow our inner path. Encoded in our hearts and minds is a map to greatness and joy. Swallow asks us to follow that path and trust where we end up, staying present and positive. I really enjoyed this painting. I felt like I found the rhythm of the shapes and colors with ease, and finally had a grasp of how to work with my paints of the metal canvases I ended up using.  It feels so light and airy, perhaps a reflection of the bright and heartwarming chirp of the Swallow.

SLSZ0727.jpgDay 7: Cuckoo

I loved the serendipity of this final bird messenger. Cuckoo signals a completion of a process and the dawning of a new life. It filled with such excitement and resolution to draw such a fitting card for the final day of this series. It really affirms the power of creating art in a meditative state. This final painting is like a bright sun shining and I found the song of the Cuckoo to be a joy to paint with.

I was a little sad for this series to come to an end and I am excited to come up with more meditative projects like this to complete in the future. All of these beautiful sphere paintings are looking for new homes to fill with their radiant vibrations. Message me for more details on that. Each painting is on a nifty metal sign as the canvas , and I’m beyond pleased with the result. They have a built in stand in the back for placing upon an altar or shelf, and can easily be hung on the wall. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Blessed Be.

What I Learned from Red Shoes

First and foremost – THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who came out and saw my first one woman show. Thank you to my friends and family for the constant support and encouragement. Thank you to the Boulder Fringe for pulling my name out of the hat and providing a space for me to explore my art completely uninhibited.

This show has been a huge portal for me. I have been saying for years and years and years and YEARS that I want to create a one woman show and put my artistic voice and vision fully on stage. And now it’s over and I feel so pleased having completed the process. After my opening night show wrapped, and I was flooded with praise from my audience, I felt truly triumphant. What a rush!

IMG_0264I learned several lessons on this artistic venture. The first one being, You are not alone. I have a tendency to dig in my feet and feel safer doing everything by myself. As a one woman show there are certainly a lot of aspects to the creating that were extremely individual and solitary. However, as the days ticked by, I found my stress mounting and my doubts growing the longer I kept the creative process to myself. When I finally reached out and starting asking for feedback and guidance and assistance, that’s when the piece really began to solidify and become real magic. AND everyone I reached out to was so honored and excited to be a part of the process. Thank you to all the people who helped me ask for help.

I learned to Trust my timing. I’m sure many creative types struggle with procrastination like me, but over the course of this six month period I reframed my procrastinator as a powerful ally. Instead of letting my inner critic shriek endlessly about the time I was wasting, I calmed that voice and realized I was letting things simmer, allowing creative ideas to dance about, rather than beating them into the shapes I wanted them to be. One piece of choreography in the show was stumping me over and over again. I had formed an idea for the segment, and yet continued to ignore working on it. Finally it dawned on me that I didn’t feel comfortable with the original idea, and procrastinating helped me ease into that reality. After addressing my fears, and pivoting to a new possibility, I fell into a piece of choreography I truly loved.

People have asked me if I would do this kind of project again, and I know for sure if I did, it would look radically different to this show. What I do know is that I will continue to be an artist. I will continue to dance and perform. And I’m excited to see what new opportunities will come my way now that I have passed through this artistic portal.

If you saw the show I would love to hear your feedback. Follow this link to the Boulder Fringe Website and leave me a review. I appreciate it SO MUCH!

Red Shoes – Projection Design

The major multimedia element of my production, Red Shoes, is the projection that functions as the set. It help sets the tone for each vignette and carries the viewer on a visual journey through colors and textures and moods. The video is almost beautiful enough to stand alone without the dance or the music or the dialogue, but I enjoy the depth it adds to the performance, creating layers upon layers for the audience to focus on.

I began my journey with projection design years ago when creating basic videos of color and shape in iMovie for student performances with the non profit Turning the Wheel. That curiosity evolved and was encouraged by my good friend Alana Shaw when she invited me to dive even deeper into projection art with the creation of a video set for her stunning piece, Stardust and Water. I learned a lot working on the video for that performance, which was mapped to the stage and completely immersed the performers in stars, water, flowers, clouds, watermelon and more. It was quite the accomplishment and it has been refined with each city Stardust and Water visits.

Taking what I learned from that monumental project, I was emboldened to create a video for my own one woman show. The video for Red Shoes combines original footage that I have collected over the years, motion backgrounds found online, and videos from the public domain. Two excerpts in the video include choreographed short films that are complete artistic thoughts in their own right and were filmed, edited, and scripted by me for the piece. Below I share some of my artistic insights and creations for various clips in the show!

Red Shoes premieres TOMORROW!

Friday August 18th at the Pine Street Church as part of the Boulder International Fringe Festival.

Tickets are still available for all four shows through the Fringe Festival Website.

The Rising Sun: I thoroughly enjoy blending two pieces of footage together to create something completely new and original. I especially like to layer my own original footage with clips collected from creative commons and public domain. This shot layers a shot I took while on a walk in Denver of grass in the wind with a video of the sun rising. The combined effect elevated the moment to a beautiful place.

Wheel of Dancers: Performance art and projection design aren’t the only realms I explore with my creativity. I also spend a lot of time creating mixed media paintings and it was important to me to include this side of my artistry in the projection. This vignette from the projection is a slow motion video of a mixed media canvas spinning, and then layered with a motion background to reinvigorate the color and texture that appears in person when looking at the painting. I’m so pleased with the overall effect this created.

Power within our own Feet:  A powerful theme throughout the show is the push and pull of looking outside oneself for power vs finding that power within. One of the stand alone moments in the film features a dance I recorded of my feet, honoring the depth of knowledge and grounding that exists in that part of me. I was honored to layer a film of a friends tapestry over my dance to create even more depth and richness. The final piece is like a visual collage, combining colorful elements to create something that no one has ever seen before.

Screen Shot 2018-08-16 at 2.24.15 PM

Tornado:  Another aspect that I really love about the video is the incorporation of images from the public domain. There is so much wonderful material that has been saved and collected from the past, and with the magic of the internet it’s become extremely accessible. I love the vintage feel it creates, pushing parts of the show into a timeless realm and hopefully creating meaningful connections for individuals watching. Along with clips of storms and tornadoes, images of spiders, forests, as well as audio clips from 40’s radio, are peppered throughout the performance.

Screen Shot 2018-08-16 at 1.51.54 PM

I’ve enjoyed working on the projection aspect of Red Shoes so much that I am feeling inspired to pursue creating films that can stand completely alone, with no blending over dance and theatre. Let me know if you would be interested in seeing my work evolve in this way. I’d love to hear your thoughts. But first I have to complete Red Shoes! See you tomorrow.

Tickets are still available for all four shows through the Fringe Festival Website.
